Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) has been observed in May by the Malaysian Association of Speech-Language and Hearing (MASH) since 2015. With this year’s theme, “Accessible Hearing and Communication For All”, SoundLife Hearing joins this campaign to increase public awareness of communication and hearing impairments as well as the roles of speech-language pathologists and audiologists in providing professional assistance.
Speech, language, voice, and hearing impairments have a significant negative impact on both individual and societal health. Hearing and other communication impairments can develop at any age and in all racial and socioeconomic groups, and they impact how people interact with their surroundings.
WHO’s First World Report on Hearing
Early detection and treatment of hearing loss are crucial. Numerous people struggle with undiagnosed hearing loss and frequently are unaware that certain words and sounds are being missed. The first step in solving the problem is to check one’s hearing.
- In today’s world, noise is increasingly recognized as a major threat to both public health and the environment.
- Over 50% of people between the ages of 12 and 35 listen to music on portable audio devices at a noise level that could endanger their hearing.
- As a general guideline, keep the volume below 60% to be safe.
- If you frequently use personal audio devices near loud noises, consider utilizing noise-canceling earbuds or headphones rather than turning up the volume.
- For sensitive users, such as youngsters, listening through personal audio devices shouldn’t be louder than 75 dB, and 80 dB for adults for 40 hours per week.
- Listeners who often use personal audio devices can expose themselves to the same volume of sound that an industrial worker would hear during an 8-hour shift at 85 dB in just 15 minutes of music.
Keep your hearing healthy! If you already have hearing loss or are feeling pain, discomfort, or ringing in your ears take action to prevent it from growing worse. Get your hearing checked at SoundLife Hearing!
How to Identify the Signs of Speech and Language Disorder?
The causes of speech and language problems may vary. They include traumatic brain injuries, stroke, and conditions that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. They may also result from breathing difficulties, vocal cord injuries, and head and neck cancers.
The following list of signs could indicate a speech or language disorder:
- difficulties saying sounds clearly
- speech that is slurred or spoken slowly
- coordination issues with the mouth or speaking
- having trouble recreating speech sounds
- difficulty producing sounds or words
- repetition of words, sounds, or word fragments
- vocal alterations such as hoarseness, raspiness, breathiness, nasality, or low voice loudness
- difficulty coming up with the right things to speak
- difficulties in expressing their needs or wants
- stating words out of order
- difficulty understanding conversations or directions
- inability to comprehend what others are saying
- new issues with math, spelling, reading, or writing
Speech and Language Disorders Affecting Your Quality of Life
Speech and language impairments can affect a person’s overall quality of life. Affected individuals are more prone to mental illness, learning challenges, behavioral disorders, social isolation, and unemployment. However, by determining the speech or language disorder and receiving expert clinical support, the risks of these disorders can be managed.
Speech therapists are skilled at identifying, evaluating, and treating impairments of language, communication, and swallowing. They can assist those who struggle with stuttering, voice use, reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension, social skills, and speaking. A stroke, brain injury, learning difficulty, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, dementia, or hearing loss are among the conditions that might cause developmental delays in people who would benefit from speech therapy. Additionally, speech therapists can help those who have trouble safely swallowing food or liquids.
