🗓️ Why May Matters: International Speech-Language-Hearing Month

Each May, the world comes together to raise awareness on communication and hearing health. At Soundlife Hearing, we’re proud to support International Speech-Language-Hearing Month 2025 with a focus on awareness of early-stage hearing care.

Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or educator — this month is a vital reminder to recognize early signs, act quickly, and protect developing ears.

🔍 Recognising the Signs of Hearing Loss in Children

Hearing loss in children can go unnoticed. Without early detection, it can impact speech, learning, and social development.

Common Signs by Age Group:

👶 Infants (0–12 months)

  • Not startled by loud sounds
  • No reaction to voices
  • Delayed babbling

🚼 Toddlers (1–3 years)

  • Limited vocabulary
  • Unclear or muffled speech
  • Difficulty following instructions

🧒 School-aged Children (4–12 years)

  • Frequently asks “What?”
  • Turns up the volume excessively
  • Appears inattentive in class

 🧑‍🎓 Teenagers (13–19 years)

  • Withdrawal from conversations or group settings
  • Complains of ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Poor academic performance despite effort
  • Listens to music at very high volumes
  • Appears to ignore parents or teachers unintentionally

🧔 Adults (20 years and above)

  • Frequently asking others to repeat themselves
  • Difficulty hearing in noisy environments (e.g., restaurants, meetings)
  • Turning the TV or radio up louder than others prefer
  • Feeling exhausted or frustrated during conversations
  • Avoiding social situations due to hearing difficulties

👉 Tip: If you observe any of these signs, book a comprehensive hearing test with our audiologists immediately.

💬 Communication Disorders: What Parents Should Know

Not all communication disorders are due to hearing loss. Here’s what to look out for:

  • Speech Issues: Trouble pronouncing sounds, stuttering, or voice changes
  • Language Challenges: Difficulty understanding or using words to express ideas
  • Social Communication Problems: Struggles with gestures, taking turns in conversation, or storytelling

These issues can affect confidenceclassroom performance, and social interaction — but with early intervention, children can thrive.

🎧 The Hidden Risk: Gaming and Hearing Loss

With increased screen time and headphone use, many children face noise-induced hearing loss — often unnoticed until it’s too late.

What Parents Need to Know:

  • 85 decibels (like city traffic) over long periods can damage hearing
  • Loud gaming or music through headphones is a major risk

How to Protect Your Child:

  • Set volume limits on devices
  • Use noise-canceling headphones
  • Encourage breaks every 30–60 minutes
  • If you can hear the sound from their headphones — it’s too loud!

✅ 5 Easy Ways to Safeguard Your Child’s Hearing

  1. Schedule annual hearing tests, especially if your child has frequent ear infections
  2. Limit exposure to loud environments (fireworks, concerts, noisy toys)
  3. Use ear protection when swimming or around loud machinery
  4. Teach responsible screen time and headphone use
  5. Model good hearing habits at home
