Every September, Deaf Awareness Month reminds us that communication is about more than hearing—it’s about understanding, respect, and inclusion.
In Malaysia, many people live with hearing loss or deafness. Some communicate through spoken language, others use sign language, lip reading, hearing aids, or cochlear implants. There is no single “right” way to communicate—what matters most is making the effort to connect.
How you can make a difference
Face the person when speaking so they can see your facial expressions and lip movements.
Speak clearly and naturally—there’s no need to shout.
Reduce background noise whenever possible, especially in restaurants or family gatherings.
Be patient and repeat or rephrase if needed instead of saying “never mind.”
Ask how they prefer to communicate rather than making assumptions.
At SoundLife Hearing, we believe that greater awareness starts with everyday kindness. Whether it’s encouraging a loved one to have their hearing checked or making conversations more accessible, small actions can make a life-changing difference.
This Deaf Awareness Month, let’s build a more inclusive Malaysia—where everyone has the opportunity to be heard, understood, and valued. 💙
